Laboratories

Laboratory-based research, also called basic vision science research, forms the foundation for the clinical research, education and patient care that make us a world-class eye institute.

Cellular and Molecular Immunology

Developing a new class of human herpes vaccines. Seeing an end to ocular, oro-facial and genital herpes via an innovative mucosal vaccine. For more information please email: Dr. BenMohamed

Eye Structure and Function Testing

For more information about the Eye Structure and Function Testing Lab, please email: Andrew Browne, MD, PhD or Lilangi Ediriwickrema, MD

Ocular Surface and Dry Eye

Studying the causes and mechanisms of dry eye. For more information, please email: James Jester, Ph.D.

Ophthalmic Laser Research

For more information, please email: Tibor Juhasz, PhD

Mitochondrial Research

The Mitochondrial Research Lab focuses on the effect of drugs on the mitochondrial genetics of patients with retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. For more information, please email: Baruch D. Kuppermann, MD, PhD.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Research in the Diabetic Retinopathy Lab is focused on investigating the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and other complications of long-term diabetes, and developing novel therapeutic approaches to inhibit those complications. For more information, please email: Timothy Kern, PhD.

Chemistry and Biology of Vision

For more information, please email: Philip Kiser, PhD.

Stem Cell and Retinal Regeneration Program

Research in the Stem Cell and Retinal Regeneration Program at the UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute is directed toward the development of novel therapies for retinal degenerative diseases, specifically retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular Degeneration (AMD). For more information, please email: Henry Klassen, MD, PhD.

Center for Translational Vision Research

The UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute Center for Translational Vision Research serves as an international leader in advancing research and bolstering the support of investigators pursuing basic and translational sciences relevant to vision. For more information, please email: Krzysztof Palczewski, PhD.

Institute of Immunology

The UCI Institute for Immunology brings together over two dozen researchers from different disciplines. For more information, please email: Eric Pearlman, PhD.

Retinal Transplantation Laboratory

Working towards a stem cell-based retina therapy to treat blindness.  The Seiler Lab research focuses on reversing vision loss in chronic stages of retinal degeneration, which includes Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-related Macular Degeneration. For more information, please email: Magdalena Seiler, PhD.

Aging in Age-related Eye Diseases

The focus of the Age-Related Eye Disease lab is to understand the molecular mechanism of aging by studying the processes regulating age-related eye diseases, with an emphasis on how coordinated changes in chromatin structure and nuclear organization affect cellular, metabolic and transcriptional programs. For more information, please email: Dorota Skowronska-Krawczyk, Ms.C., PhD.
