Education At the UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, our faculty of internationally recognized physicians, surgeons and scientists provide highly specialized training to future ophthalmologists and conduct leading-edge clinical trials. Home Education Medical Students UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology offer an elective to introduce third- and fourth-year medical students to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders, as well as to the subspecialties of retina, glaucoma, pediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, uveitis and cornea. Medical Student Residency UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute’s ophthalmology residency program offers intensive, wide-ranging clinical and surgical experience, as well as opportunities to conduct meaningful research. Residency Fellowships UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology offers fellowship training to well-qualified physicians in the subspecialties of cornea, glaucoma and retina. These selective programs emphasize both clinical training and research. Fellowships Grand Rounds Grand Rounds provide updates on the latest treatment modalities and research in ophthalmology. They are held for UCI Health and community physicians, as well as other healthcare professionals.
